| DUAL PURPOSE |
Mission |
Late September to middle October |
April to July |
Mission is a self pollinator but another pollinator is advised as to minimize the possibility of alternative crop.
For table objectives plant Manzanilla, Calamata and Noccellara as pollinators.
For oil objectives plant Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina as pollinators.
Pollinators should be planted in a ratio of 25% of the orchard. |
This cultivar can be used as a table or oil olive. It is currently the most popular olive for production in South Africa because of its dual-purpose. and that it can be planted under a great variety of circumstances. This cultivar produces good quality black table olives and high quality fruity oils.
Missions is a very vigorous cultivar and grows upright. Ripening is very late and the possibility of alternative crop exists on weaker grounds with stress (big crop in one year and light crop next).
Plant width of Mission in good soil is 6x4m and in poor soil 6x3m. Production of Mission starts in the fourth year after being planted and is in full production by year eight (8-10ton/ha).

| OIL OLIVES |
Coratina |
Middle August to middle October |
April - June |
Recommended that Leccino and Frantoio are planted together as to pollinate another and because a mixture of the three cultivars produces a very smooth, balanced oil. |
This cultivar is used only for the production of oil. The oil produced from this olive is bitter and are recommended to be planted together with Frantoio and Leccino on a scale of 20% of the orchard. |
|
Planting width is 6x4 m in good soil and 6x3 m in poor soil. Production of these fruits starts in the fourth year of growth and full production is in year eight (8-10 ton/ha). |
Frantoio |
Middle August to middle October |
April - July |
Recommended that Leccino and Coratina are planted together as to pollinate another and because a mixture of the three cultivars produces a very smooth, balanced oil. |
This cultivar is used solely for the production of oil. Oils that are produced from this olive is strong peppery and are recommended to be planted together with Leccino and Coratina on a scale of 50% of the orchard. Frantoio is a vigorous grower and has an upright habit of growth. Frantoio ripens very late and the possibility of alternative crop does exist on weaker soil under stress. |
Fruit weighs 3 g and consists of 20% oil. Produces high harvests. |
Planting width is 6x4 m in good soil and 6x3 m in poor soil. Production of these fruits starts in the fourth year and growth and full production is in year eight (8-10 ton/ha). |
Leccino |
Middle August to middle October |
Early March |
Recommended that Coratina and Frantoio are planted together as to pollinate another and because a mixture of the three cultivars produces a very smooth, balanced oil. |
The cultivar is used only for the production of oil. The oil produced from this olive is fairly peppery and sweet and are recommended to be planted together with Frantoio and Coratina on a scale of 30% of the orchard. |

| TABLE OLIVES |
Calamata |
Late September to middle October |
April to end May |
Self pollinating, but it is recommended to plant Manzanilla and Nocellara (25% of orchard) with Calamata. |
This olive ripens and is processed as a black olive and has a very good flavour and taste. Very popular in South Africa.
The tree grows upright and is relatively strong. Calamata needs a relative good soil with a good capability of retaining water. It must be planted in soil with a PH above 6.5 and a good buffer capacity.
|
Fruit is 5-6 g and has 85% flesh to pit. Produces good harvests and has a medium soil substance, which lessens with ripening. |
Plant width of table olives in good soil is 6x4m and on weaker soil 6x3m. The cultivar begin producing in the fourth year and are in full production by year 8 (10 ton/ha). |
Manzanilla |
Late September to middle October |
February to March |
Calamata, Nocellara (25% of orchard) and Manzanilla must preferably be planted together for pollinating purposes. |
This cultivar is convenient for green processing. Manzanilla is usually grown in parts where frost is found because it is harvested early. It has a slight compact, spreading growth. Alternative crop could be found when grown under stress. |
Fruit is 5g and consists of 90% flesh. Medium to low oil substance. |
Plant width of table olives in good soil is 6x4m and on weaker soil 6x3m. The cultivar begin producing in the fourth year and are in full production by year 8 (10 ton/ha). |
Nocellara |
Late September to middle October |
Middle April |
Calamata, Manzanilla (25% of orchard) and Nocellara must preferably be planted together for pollinating purposes. |
This cultivar is convenient for green processing. The tree has an upright and relative strong growth. Nocellara can be planted in a variety of soils, but better results and bigger fruit are found when grown on better soils. |
Fruit weighs 5-6 g and consists of 85% flesh. Medium to low oil substance. |
Plant width of table olives in good soil is 6x4 m and on weaker soil 6x3 m. The cultivar begin producing in the fourth year and are in full production by year 8 (10 ton/ha). |
